The Arts Society Bowdon was established in 1981. It is a friendly and welcoming society affiliated to The Arts Society, a leading arts education charity with a global network of local Societies which brings people together through a shared curiosity for the arts.

We offer illustrated talks given by lecturers of national and international standing on subjects related to a wide spectrum of the arts.

The Society meets at the beautiful Edwardian Bowdon Rooms. We host one or two Guest Events each year which in recent years have taken the form of a special Society lunch and lecture and these have proved popular with the members and their guests. When circumstances allow, we offer two one-day visits each year to places of interest to members and a longer visit of several days and there are also opportunities to join visits arranged by the Arts Society.

Our volunteers undertake various projects in the local community such as restoration work on the library at Tabley House and church recording at Hale Chapel and St. James’ Church, Gatley. We also sponsor educational work in local schools and colleges. One of our successful projects has been a Heritage Trail of Bowdon and we have recently established a new trail based on 3 female Altrincham artists, Helen Allingham, Gladys Vasey and Edith le Breton. We expect to establish more trails in the local area in the coming years.

‘Threads through the Bible ’ is an astonishing textile art exhibition showing from 16th January to 3rd March at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.  If you’re interested in the visual arts, textile art or sewing, don’t miss it!   This is a great opportunity to enjoy a wonderful exhibition in a wonderful location.  It may be a bit of a journey for some, but it will be right up their street for many …

The show consists of 44 beautiful silk panels re-imagining key sections in the Bible. They’re huge – nearly 3m high – and if they were put side by side they would stretch 100 metres.

It’s one of the largest textile art projects, ever.  It has taken artist Jacqui Parkinson ten years to complete - and 25 million stitches.  You’ll find the huge scale, vibrant colours, dramatic and complex designs truly breath-taking.

Many Arts Society members saw the exhibition’s first part, ‘Threads through Creation’, when it toured 2021-2024 – and loved it!

Money raised by the sale of raffle tickets is used to raise money for Young/Community Arts so please bring along some coins to buy your raffle tickets. They are on sale in the lobby.

Just one example of how the money is spent is the several bags of children’s craft packs Gwynneth donated on our behalf to the Hope Centre, a Community Hub in Partington last week in good time for the opening of their Christmas Shop. The centre works with approximately 200 families in the Partington area some of whom receive goods and food parcels free of charge. At this time of year, the Christmas Shop allows parents to buy goods and gifts at significantly lower prices.  More information on the Hope Centre can be found on their website: https://www.hopecentrepartington.com
